Chinese domestic chipmaker Zhaoxin is making a KX-6000G CPU with a 1.5 TFLOPs integrated graphics processor as fast as NVIDIA’s decade-old GT 630.
To explain things in detail, Zhaoxin is a Chinese chipmaker that offers both CPU and GPU IPs based on its own architecture. The manufacturer’s next-generation KX-6000 CPU lineup will replace the KX-5000 and ZX-200 CPUs on the market in 2017-2018. The latest chips are expected to have 4 cores, 8 threads, clock speeds up to 3.0 GHz, DDR4 DRAM support, PCIe 3.0 I/O, and a native 16nm architecture.
Last month we talked about how the KH-4000 series CPUs from Zhaoxin are Based on the Zen architecture, it managed to deliver single-core performance close to AMD’s 1st Generation Ryzen CPUs. Compared to the KX series, which is mainly aimed at the local consumer segment, the KH series is mainly aimed at the server segment and offers 16 cores and 16 threads. Although the architecture is not as updated as the KX-6000G CPUs, it is also based on a 16nm process node.
So, back to the Zhaoxin KX-6000G CPUs, we can also call them as APUs because they use the Zhaoxin-made ZX C1080 GPU. The naming scheme and chip design are very similar to AMD’s Ryzen Desktop APUs, which use a discrete GPU architecture and are labeled “G”.
According to Zhaoxin, the CPU consists of 8 cores and 16 threads, which is made possible by combining two shafts in the same package. The standard version of the KX-6000 CPUs only comes with the C-960 integrated GPU, which offers VGA, HDMI, DP support up to 4K resolution. The new integrated GPU offers not only increased performance but also better graphics capabilities.
For starters, in 3DMark 11, the Zhaoxin integrated GPU scores close to 1000, which is more than 3 times more than the old GPU. It comes with a new graphics and image processing engine compatible with Galaxy Kirin KOS, Tongxin Software UOS, Windows and various other Chinese mainstream operating systems. The chip also offers full compatibility with DirectX 11, Open GL 4.5 and OpenGL 1.2 APIs while outputting a native 4K display. While this is a big improvement over its predecessor, the integrated chip is still on par with the NVIDIA GT 630 graphics card in the 3DMark 11 (Performance) benchmark, which scored a similar score. The Zhaoxin KX-6000G CPU was also tested in GLMark 2, where it scored 3,116 points, while the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 scored 10,516 points in the same benchmark. As for the CPU, the Zhaxoin chip scores over 15,000 MIPS in multi-threaded decompression, making it faster than the AMD Ryzen 3 1300X and close to the Intel Core i5-7500. However, Chinese GPU makers have been doing their best since 2016 to achieve parity with AMD and NVIDIA GPUs.
