Joshua Tree’s famous ‘Invisible House’ just hit the market for $18 million – Robb Report

From afar, you may think your eyes are playing tricks on you. But look closely and you’ll discover one of architecture’s greatest optical illusions: the Invisible House.

Located in the middle of the Mojave desertnow famous Joshua tree the residence is named for its reflective glass exterior that reflects the rocky landscape. Depending on the angle, the time of day and even the weather, the minimalist structure disappears into the rugged surroundings of the national park. Over the years, Invisible House has spawned many television cameras, served as a filming location for advertising campaigns and attracted the attention of A-listers. The modernist abode’s biggest claim to fame, though, is its owners, indie film producers Chris and Roberta Hanley. American Psycho. Now mirrored man it can be yours—for $18 million, that is.

The couple, who bought the land in the early 2000s, had already built a holiday home on the 70-acre site, but a few years later learned that its size did not meet local regulations. Part of the property, which measures approximately 225 feet, is raised off the ground using concrete pillars that prevent disturbing the site’s massive rocks. Due to the site’s harsh temperature, the facade is covered with heat-reflective Solarcool glass, which gives the exterior a mirror-like appearance. In addition, it also filters out UV rays and infrared frequencies. Chris told them WSJ the bottle took a full year to deliver and cost him about $700,000. Sustainability was of course a focus during the construction process, so you can find an abode equipped with eco-friendly foam roofing. In addition, Invisible House uses a solar-thermal system to generate electricity and hot water.

The aesthetics here are decidedly minimal. Consider a concrete floor, some light-colored furniture, and little else so you don’t distract from those amazing desert views. In total, the spread stretches 5,500 square feet and has three bedrooms, a kitchen and a dining area. If you want to cool off from the region’s intense heat, in the heart of the living room is a 100-foot indoor pool that can be heated when temperatures drop. In another remarkable element, the glass walls can actually open to the outdoors on three sides.

And in the master bedroom, you’ll find a bed that sits on a 2,500-pound glass frame. According to Chris, it was not easy to get it in – it took two days and five workers. Fortunately, all items are included in the sale.

“Bringing Invisible House to market for the first time is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Aaron Kirman of AKG | Christie’s International Real Estate in a press release. “Brought to life by a visionary film producer and Frank Gehry collaborator, this architectural triumph offers unique intangibles in the middle of the desert that can only be experienced on the property itself.”

Since its inception, Invisible House has welcomed celebrities such as Demi Lovato and Diplo. he rented a residence for a run off the grid. He also starred in the second season The World’s Most Exciting Vacation Rentals On Netflix and appeared Empire of Bling. Now, instead of just spending the weekend or marveling at this unique abode of yesteryear, if you’re willing to live in the desert, you can actually live there full-time.
